Why Use No-IP Plus Managed DNS As Your Primary DNS Provider?

Your Domain Registrar likely provides you with a basic Managed DNS solution, so why should you use No-IP Plus Managed DNS? Here are some things to consider when comparing our Managed DNS solution with your registrar’s basic DNS.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

No-IP has 100 servers across the globe running our Plus Managed DNS infrastructure. Our Anycast network ensures your DNS is always up and fast, 100% of the time.

Other Domain Registrars

Most Domain Registrars only host your DNS on one or two servers. Without diversified name servers, the risks of outages increase.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

Our Anycast DNS Network means that your website will always load quickly, in any country. We are proud to rank among the top 5 DNS Providers in speed and uptime.

Other Domain Registrars

With only a few nameservers, DNS queries can be slow due to the bandwidth limitations and the distance that queries must travel.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

We are experts in DNS and have created easy to use tools to control nearly every aspect of your DNS configuration.

Other Domain Registrars

The DNS that is included with domain registration often has very limited configuration options.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

Our Plus Managed DNS offers all of the popular advanced record types and allows you to customize your TTL settings.

Other Domain Registrars

Basic DNS provided by Domain Registrars typically lacks advanced features and record types. TTL’s are typically set at a longer interval.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

Our primary service is Managed DNS. Our Expert Support Team, based in the United States, understands DNS and they are here to help you when you need it most.

Other Domain Registrars

Registrars primary product focus is domain registration, not Managed DNS. If you need help, expert support may not be available.

No-IP Plus Managed DNS

Diversifying your DNS from your registration ensures that you can easily make DNS configuration changes if there is ever unforeseen downtime with your primary DNS provider.

Other Domain Registrars

If you are using your registrar's DNS and your registrar goes down, you won’t have access to the domain OR the DNS configuration.

Product FAQs

What Is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. DNS servers translate names, such as “noip.com” into the numeric IP address that the Internet uses to send and receive information.

What Is a Domain Name?

A unique name such as noip.com The Importance of DNS Diversification that can have a hostname attached to it. In the example www.noip.com, noip.com is the domain name.

What Is a Dynamic Zone File?

A DNS Zone is the file on a DNS server that contains all of your domain’s hostnames and records.

Why Is Managed DNS Important?

Assigning a Managed DNS provider to your domain will ensure that your domain is fast, reliable, and always available.

What are Points of Presence (PoP)?

Our DNS infrastructure is made up of DNS servers located around the world. Points of Presence refer to the physical location of those DNS servers. Our DNS infrastructure is hosted at each one of our 100 PoP across the globe. This means that wherever you are in the world, your website will always resolve quickly.

What Is Unicast?

Unicast is a DNS routing scheme and is how most DNS networks work. An easy way to think of Unicast networks is one-to-one. Unicast is taking an IP address and assigning it to ONE unique nameserver. If you have the following nameservers: ns1, ns2, ns3, each one of those nameservers will be responsible for answering certain queries. If ns2 goes down due to power outage or severe weather, the server will move on to the next available unicast server. If the second server goes down due to being overloaded, your domain will be fully inaccessible.

What is An Anycast Network and Why Is It Important?

If Unicast is one-to-one, Anycast is one-to-many. Anycast is taking the same IP address and assigning it to multiple locations across the network. In the same scenario as above, your website isn’t just hosted at one location (or on one nameserver), it is hosted on multiple name servers, in multiple locations. So, if one server in the Anycast cluster goes down, your website won’t go down with it. The queries will just be answered by the next server instead. Anycast is used to help distribute traffic and query load across the entire network, so one point of presence (PoP) isn’t always doing all of the work. This helps keep the network fast and reliable. Anycast also helps to ensure that someone visiting your website from Tokyo, Japan, queries the server that is closest to their location. This helps to ensure that the website loads quickly.

What is TTL?

TTL, Time To Live is how many seconds the recursive DNS server should cache (remember) the IP address your hostname resolves to.

Is There a Zone Limit For Plus Managed DNS?

You’re able to upgrade anytime, up to 250 zones. If you need more than 250 zones we will be glad to work with you directly. Please contact sales@noip.com.

Can I Use a Domain with No-IP If It Is Registered Somewhere Else?

Yes, you may use No-IP Plus Managed DNS for your domain's DNS even if it is hosted at a different registrar. You will simply update your NS Records to No-IP’s name servers.

ns1.no-ip.com ns2.no-ip.com ns3.no-ip.com ns4.no-ip.com
Why is Secondary DNS Important?

Secondary DNS ensures that your DNS is redundant. If you already have a Managed DNS provider, you can have No-IP’s infrastructure act as a backup to your primary DNS in the event that your main provider should ever go offline. Allocating a secondary DNS provider is an easy way to avoid unnecessary downtime.

Can I add No-IP as a Secondary DNS somewhere else?

Yes! We actually highly recommend this. If your DNS is managed somewhere else and they happen to go down, your website will go down with it. Once your website is down, you won’t be able to make any record updates until your Primary DNS server is back up.

Assigning a Secondary DNS provider eliminates this problem. In the same scenario, if your DNS at your main DNS provider goes down, your Secondary DNS will then kick into action. This means that your website will stay available, even though your primary DNS server is down. To learn more about how this works, check out this blog The Importance of DNS Diversification.
